A girl's voice broke the large man out of his concentration on his computer screen. He nearly jumped off his bed in surprise.

The girl laughed suddenly. "Calm down, big bro. It's only me."

The man sighed. The weeks of little sleep, intense workouts and long workdays was wearing him thin.

"I have to go to the gym," he declared.

"Why?" the teenager asked, "Didn't you go this morning?"

"I have to go again. I'm doing my shoulder workouts."

The girl walked closer to him, staring at his huge, muscled back and arms.

MinesweeperLife is like a game of Minesweeper.

Nobody really knows what it is or how to get through it.

Sometimes you get stuck in difficult situations, and you just want to start over.

You're driven to giving up.

You make stupid choices.

You're driven to take guesses and leaps of faith; sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

You just click the wrong button, and it ends up ruining everything.

Once in a while, you're given a huge handout. Other times, just a small piece.

You don't know why you keep going on with it.

But you're damn well not going to close out the window before you win.

I received a letter in the mail
Requesting my duties to assail
I took a breath and exhaled
It was time for life to turn a trail

I was fresh out of school
With not a clue what to do
Biting more than I could chew
I wanted to try something new

Before I knew it I enlisted
To fight others sick and twisted
To help others unassisted
With guns or hands tightly-fisted

Once at camp I shaved my head
Still holding thoughts of dread
That before I knew it I'd be dead
And the rose garden would be my bed

Watching faith as it flows
Into the path that I chose
There I went on my own
Roaming now into the vast unknown

Such a shame history repeats

200 Plastic StrawsTwo-hundred plastic straws
are scattered on my floor.
They haven't moved an inch
from where I dropped them there before.

A multi-colored frenzy
is dancing on my tiles.
Ghosts long past
come flying back
to stay there for a while.

The straws slipped through my fingers
and so, they all tapped down
like the movement of a second hand,
eternity, an hour.

They fell away, as does the past,
so pick up every piece.
Throw it away or use it well,
or its dance will never cease.

Two hundred plastic straws,
or at least, that's how it was.
Now a hundred ninety-nine lay there,
a pink one in my glass.

During the winter season on a night very cold

I met a little boy on the road decades ago
Who looked at the time to be about eight or nine.

I saw him aimlessly wandering from afar
Dodging cars who simply passed him by.
Judging by his ripped clothes he had many scars
And a pair of the most pained blue eyes

Now normally I would have just continued driving.
Who the hell cares about this little ploy?
Its tough enough in this world surviving
Without striving to care about some little boy.

Patriots DayThe time is now 4:26 PM on Monday, the 15th of April, 2013. Patriots Day.
